Yesterday while driving the better half and I were discussing our experiences with discrimination as gay men, his experiences as a Latino and my experience as a white male. Being gay men we can empathize about discrimination to a point, but we agreed we can never fully understand what it is to be black.
What we can do is acknowledge that we don’t have the same plight, but we can stand for what is right. We can speak out against injustice. We can love, support and stand with our black brothers and sisters. We can believe in the power of Love.
Power of Love – Deee-Lite – 1990
It’s not anything that any sane person didn’t already know. It is about time it is spoken in public. It’s about fucking time we as a nation did something the fuck about it.
I was raised in Virginia and was in college in 1984. I lived the experience of fraternities as well.
Virginia has a reputation and rightly so. Virginia can be a racist place. I know as I experienced and witnessed it then. I still witness it when I return there to visit family today.
Racism is wrong. I didn’t realize how racist the culture of my upbringing in that state was until I left.
Virginia is steeped in American history. Virginia is proud if it’s history. Virginia is also slow to change. Virginia is often blind to its own faults.
Racism is a blind spot that Virginia unfortunately has.
Is everyone in Virginia racist? Hell no. But racism was alive there in 1984 and still is alive there today.
Did we Virginians know blackface and KKK robes were racist back in 1984? Hell yes we did.
Did the current governor of Virginia make a mistake in 1984? Yes he did. Should that mistake alone of childish behavior then end his career today? Maybe not depending on his reaction and his amending of his ways since.
However his reaction, denial and lame attempt at the unauthentic apology is as childish, shameful, disgusting, and as racist, as his irresponsible immature 1984 collegiate behavior. In my opinion his insensitive and insincere reactions, not even considering the appalling personal yearbook page revelations, completely disqualify him from any ability to lead or govern.
The Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, must resign now.
There but for the Grace of God By Machine is quite the toe tapper. It always gets Fearsome swinging to it’s 1979 disco beat.
There but for the Grace of God, although fictitious lyrics, reminds us that the human nature of fear often drives unfounded racism.
Fear, False Evidence Appearing Real.
It is the weekend, get your toe tappin’ and your tush swinging. It’s time to dance.
If you don’t think this is about Race,
Then you ain’t never been on the receiving end of discrimination.
And if you don’t believe this is about race,
Then you need to look up and read the definition of Racial Genocide.
Puerto Rico is the United States. Puerto Rican’s are Americans just like Texans and Floridians. Apparently the current leader of our federal government doesn’t recognize this. Could it be perhaps they aren’t, as a majority, white Anglo saxon of Western European decent?
Yes I went there. I went there because at this point it is becoming blatantly obvious.
