Fearsome Beard is Seven!

Yes today, June 1, 2021, marks seven years since the first post here on this here little blog thingy. Inspired by many dear friends out here in the blog community, I stepped out on a limb and wrote my first post.

Little did I ever dream that as of today I would still be blogging but also have 976 followers, 3,984 posts, 14,771 comments and 453,386 views from 147,739 visitors.

I actually love blogging and especially love the community. I am not good as I should be at keeping up with others and am even worse about commenting. I love comments and thus I should comment more.  Maybe I should set a goal. Hmmmm.

Thank each and every one of you for reading, clicking, commenting, liking and for the love that is in our community. Cheers to year 8!

We Are Family

One thing Anne Marie taught me was to have a good time.

Times get hard, politics can suck, shit happens, illness comes and it goes, we age, life isn’t always fair, work is …well work and sometimes all we can do is scream FUCK!

But

We can always stop and have a dance party.

She taught me to feel the pain, but to get up and change my attitude. To get up, get back to it and most of all have a good time. Life is short, why waste it?

She taught me that we can create our own family through our community.

Sister Sledge – We Are Family – 1979

Anne Marie, you are family!

In Loving Memory

It is with great sadness that I write this.
Our beloved friend and blogger Anne Marie in Philly has passed away.

Todd, Fearsome, Mistress Maddie and Anne Marie July 2019

Anne Marie,
I cannot fully express my gratitude that you came into my life. I thank you for the laughter, smiles, smooches, encouragement, likes, comments, tears, fun, companionship, hospitality, outlook, perspective, bitchyness, joy and most of all love. I will miss you greatly. I will always carry you in my heart and share just a piece of you with everyone I possibly can.

Todd,
My condolences in your great loss. Please know that I am always here for you.

Godspeed.

Gratitude

I’ve found that anytime I begin anew that I am more productive, creative, fulfilled and successful if I begin from a place of gratitude.

The year two thousand twenty one is fresh, so there is no better time for me to put a new foot forward toward bettering myself. I hope to be a better husband, better friend, better real estate agent, better painter, better blogger and better person in the coming year.

So I choose to start with gratitude. Being that you are reading this on this here blog thingy called Fearsome Beard, why not begin with it.

You don’t need me to tell you that twenty twenty has been a dumpster fire of a year. However as all years go, there are milestones that happen. Yes bad shit happens but so does good.

Fearsome Beard passed the milestone of ninety thousand views for the first time in our 6 year history, 94,267 views from 28,724 visitors. Both of these numbers were all time highs. All time highs thanks to you my dear readers and also thanks to blogger buddy referrals.

Our number 1 referring blog was  I Should Be Laughing with 2,855 referrals, coming in at number two is Bosguy who sent us 2,319 referrals and to round out the top three we received 1,165 referrals from Riding On . Thank you to the three of you and all of the many other wonderful Blogger buddies I have who send readers my way by including Fearsome in their blogroll and linking back to this blog. Without the support of other bloggers over the years Fearsome Beard wouldn’t have become the important part of my life that it has. Appreciate all of you I do.

While we are on the blogger buddy gratitude train I simply must thank UrSpo over at  Spo Reflections as he introduced me to blogging and walked me through the process of registering with WordPress and right into my very first post. I cannot be grateful to blogger buddies without mentioning three special ones I met many years ago in the comments section of UrSpo’s blog who are  Anne Marie ,   Sassybear  &   Erik all who have been readers and supporters of Fearsome since our first week.

Most of all I want to thank you, each and every one of you who clicks, reads, follows, likes and comments right here on our blog. Fearsome and I are humbled. We hope that we at least bring a smile to at least one face per day. Each and every smile in the world makes this world a better place.

Fearsome and I love our journey that is our life and we are happy and most grateful that you are a part of it.

Internet Trolls

Let’s just say I was called out today in the comments section of another blog to be an Internet Troll. It turned into quite the Kerfuffle. Thankfully many other commenters in that wonderful community came to my defense. I greatly appreciate them. I don’t like to point fingers by calling out someone by name, so therefore I will not do that. I will however say it was wretched, simply wretched.

I commented on another’s comment with a quick one liner that was supportive of the commenters comment, on topic and in keeping with the nature of the comments for the blog. I know the nature of the blog as I’ve been a daily reader for most of said blogs 15 year existence. I rarely comment but do on rare occasion should something come to mind that fits and I’m in the mood to.

My reprimand wasn’t from the person for whom I commented with support, but out of left field from someone who wasn’t even previously even in the conversation. I was told to “go away” because I apparently didn’t have enough previous comments recorded in my records to be there or have an opinion. I was called both an “Internet Troll” and a “sock puppet.”

So being the contemplative Beard that Fearsome is, he asked me to google the definition of Internet Troll. On Wikipedia we found this definition:

In Internet slang, a troll is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses[2] and normalizing tangential discussion,[3] whether for the troll’s amusement or a specific gain.

Hmmmm. Fearsome then started to wonder what defined Sock puppet, Wikipedia defines it as:

A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception. The term, a reference to the manipulation of a simple hand puppet made from a sock, originally referred to a false identity assumed by a member of an Internet community who spoke to, or about, themselves while pretending to be another person.[

Hmmm.

Lets then look at what happened. I commented on topic, in keeping with the nature and in support of the commenter to which I commented. Out of left field someone aggressively tries to upset and distract from the comment thread by making an unfounded off topic inflammatory name calling statement, directed at me simply because I didn’t have enough comments in my history to satisfy their personal minimum threshold.

Looking at this honestly, who would actually fit the definition of Internet Troll here?

Hmmm.

As far as sock puppet, I had never ever heard that term but let’s again look at this. On Disqus you can click on the user and see their profile. If you click on mine it’s open for all to see. One can read all my comments and even click a link to this here blog thingy, and this here blog thingy leads directly to me as I have nothing to hide. If you click on said user that did the name calling their Disqus profile is labeled “Private” and one cannot see their past comments nor anything about them.

Looking at this honestly, which profile might better fit that of a sock puppet?

Hmmm.

I’ve found in life that an aggressive accuser is often guilty of the very indiscretions to which he/she is falsely accusing another. I was brought up in the south and we had a little saying there that seems to fit. That saying is simply “Glass Houses”.

Friends, Cities and Family

The last week of April the better half and I celebrated 29 years together by treating ourselves to a east coast trip to both New York and Philadelphia. The kind lady that the check in desk of New York’s Marriott Marquis Time Square surprised us with a room upgrade. We found ourselves blessed with an unbelievable 35th floor view of Time Square eye to eye with the famous clock.

Time Square View April 2019

New York was wonderful. We made it to the Guggenheim, the Frick, MOMA, the Vessel, Bergdorf’s, the Fashion Institute, Mood, a Metz game, Rockefeller Center, Macy’s and of corse Tiffany. We saw To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Cher Show and Dear Evan Hansen. A whirlwind it was, a good one in fact.

Fearsome met a rather inspiring politician at Penn station awaiting his train to Philly.

Elijah E. Cummings

In Philly we were greeted by three wonderful friends and bloggers. Bloggers known as Mistress Maddie,  Arteejee  and none other than the famous Anne Marie in Philly. We had a great dinner with the three of them. Fun conversation and lots of laughter. Blogging really does have its benefits. The bloggers I’ve met in person over the years have all become treasured friends. I’ll be back to see these three!

Todd, Fearsome, Maddie and Anne Marie

The next day was spent with family as a Fearsome’s niece lives just outside of Philadelphia . We attended a Phillies game with the whole crew.

The better half is obviously celebrating the day, Cinco De Mayo.  …back row… Fearsome, Mom, Sister in law, brother, nephew in law, …next row… The Better Half, niece in law, great niece, great niece, great nephew and niece all taking in a Phillies game on May 5, 2019.

The highlight of our trip? Well there were many and you know what? The whole trip was a highlight. I’m blessed with a husband I love, friends I love and family I love.

Where in the world is Fearsome now?

Fearsome and I left my brother’s house in Virginia and arrived in Ft. Lauderdale FL this afternoon.

We checked into one of our favorite resorts only to hear a friendly voice call over to us. We, or should I say Fearsome, had been recognized by a daily reader. He and his friend were most friendly and complimentary. He has quite a nice beard himself.

After a short conversation we found out that he apparently discovered Fearsome Beard shortly after we started blogging on June 1, 2014. We were honored and are humbled.

We snapped a quick photo and thus we have a spontaneous Beard of the day. I didn’t ask permission to use their names or home location so I’ll keep those mum, but their photo we will post.

Cheers to the benefits of blogging and Thank You to all of my dear readers!

Blogger issues

Hello all!

I use WordPress.

Blogger eludes me.

I have a blogger account and used to be able to comment on Blogger Blogs. Along my blogging way I’ve been able to comment at times as myself on blogger and then sometimes not. Issues were occasional.

Now it seems I’m completely locked out of blogger. I can read the blogs but cannot comment. At least not as me. If you have blogger and allow anonymous comments I will identify myself in my anonymous comment. If you don’t allow anonymous comments please know I still read but am no longer allowed to comment on your blog at all.

Hopefully I’ll find resolve in the future, but for now it is what it is.

Hugs!

Over commitment

I have stretched myself thin.

We moved my mother across country into our house with us three weeks ago. I then traveled to Florida to work on rental properties there. We moved my in-laws from Fresno into a condo we own just minutes from us yesterday. We just renovated that condo and also a town house we own for my Sister-in-law to move into. My work is very busy. We are submitting for permits to build onto our house. Mom has doctor appointments, the dogs have vet appointments, I have doctor appointments, I have a rash, both our godsons are graduating…

Are you getting the picture?

To top it all off I gave up what I I enjoy (blogging and reading blogs regularly) for a news obsession since the 2016 presidential election.

Me-thinks I need to pause, re-evaluate and reset my path for maximum enjoyment of the blessings that life has given me.

I will start by writing this post and by sharing this video by two of my favorite inspirational bearded kilt wearing coaches.

This Kilted Coaches Video reminds me to ask, act and focus toward things I wish to have and not toward those I do not.

I also wish to express my gratitude to you, my readers and fellow bloggers, for sticking with me even though I’ve drifted. I also want to thank you for helping shepard me back to blogging. Don’t hesitate to give me a nudge if I stray. 😉

Blogging Benefits

A benefit of blogging that I enjoy is that of friendship.

Yesterday I received a surprise package in the mail from Meanwhile Over in Cali.

Thanks R.J. !

Next week I will have the pleasure of meeting Travel Penguin for a morning meal.

Our banter, comments, humor, insight, advice, empathy, respect and understanding make for a wonderful community. We come from all places and all walks of life. I love being part of this here blogging community and I wish to express my gratitude to all those in my blogging circle.

Hug!

Friend Reflections

Some 10, 11 or maybe even 12 years ago I started reading Spo Reflections. Little did I know that a friendship was in the making.

UrSpo & Fearsome

I read, he blogged. I read, he blogged. I added a comment, he responded. I read and commented, he blogged and responded. So it went.

Thursday of this week I went out to visit him and a few others in Palm Springs. A jolly good time was had by all. Ron was among them as well as Someone, Doug, Leon & Pat. Food, conversation, laughter and fun shared by all.

This here internet thingy doesn’t have to be isolating. All we have to do is get out and meet up.

Cheers to those I’ve met in person and those I’ve yet to meet.

Coffee with a friend

One knows a friend when the two of you can meet up and the conversation flows. The words are interesting, come easily and are comfortable. You make each other laugh, understand each other and both listen. It doesn’t matter if you saw each other yesterday or last year, the company is just plain comfortable. Time flies when the two of you are together.

Yesterday I had coffee with such a friend. We hadn’t seen each other in a year. In fact we first met at that meeting last year. We are both bloggers. Last year we had a meet up and a friendship was born. Yesterday we met, had coffee, enjoyed the company and deepened the friendship. That Blogger is this Blogger.

Yup. R.J. from Meanwhile Over in Cali.

You will find a post about our encounter over on R.J.’s Blog as well. Hopefully this year will allow the two of us to meet up again soon, sooner than another year. For R.J. Is delightful and friendships are to be treasured.

Finding words

Is it that I don’t have anything to say? No I really don’t think it is that.

Is it that I am too rushed and don’t set aside time? Very possibly.

Could it possible be finding the words to express myself? Most likely.

I have a lot to say. By saying it through the written word I go deeper. When writing I learn. Expressing myself through writing helps me explore me.

Why oh why don’t I stop more often and write? Why don’t I discipline myself? Is it possible to make it a habit?

Since starting Fearsome Beard I have learned more about myself as well as grown in ways I never expected, it was all through writing. I had never written before in my life. I have never journaled, kept a diary, written prose nor hardly ever even written a letter. I recorded nothing.

Posting pictures of a beard seems like a daily place holder. I’m not saying that posting those beards isn’t. However I do have to find them and I do usually post one that reflects a thought or mood or at least a fondness I am feeling. I also caption them ever so slightly with a word or two. It’s a good daily habit as it brings me here and it does take effort. Effort no matter how minimal.

Writing takes a bit more effort and often requires a little inspiration. I have found that the more I do it, the easier it is. Finding words is an art that comes easier and easier with practice and habit.

I guess my contemplation on this cool San Diego evening is a thoughtful challenge to myself, to express myself through written word more often. I do not want to get so caught up in the whirlwind of my daily life that I forget me.

I love blogging.

A new heart

Roger has been a beacon for us, Fearsome & myself, in our blogging adventure. Seems that he and I grew up in neighboring counties and each supported our rival high school football teams. Roger remembers seeing me out on the field directing our school’s band as it’s drum major.

Roger is love. His blog is inspiring. He shares love and support to internet strangers with his sense of humor, kind words, sense of beauty and loving thoughts/quotes. He loves his dog and his Steelers. Roger has a big heart. Roger shares his heart unconditionally and without expectation.

Roger needs a new heart.

The heart of feeling is simply an essence that makes us loving humans. The heart of muscle keeps us alive. Roger’s heart of feeling is alive and well, stronger than ever. Roger’s heart of muscle is failing.

Roger is now on a list for a new heart of muscle. He is on the transplant list in Georgia. Roger needs our help.

Financially, organ transplants are expensive.

Click HERE and you will be whisked away to a post Roger’s sister wrote on his blog 3rdnlong. There you can send love and there you can also support Roger through a donation to Georgia Transplant.org. Every little donation will be matched for double the support. Every little donation is actually a big donation of love helping a man of heart towards his new heart.

I thank you and Fearsome thanks you.

ps. If you are so inclined, please share and circulate this post and/or news on your blog as well. We are bloggers. We share and we support. We support each other in our blogging family.

New friends

Blogging allows us to interact not only with the blogger of the blog we are reading but with others in the comments. For many years I just read and commented on occasion. I met others in those comments and if they blogged I found their blogs. Relationships developed via this here internet thingy.

Eventually I met a blogger in person. He turned out to be a jolly good fellow who was well over four feet. We have met up again multiple times since and even talk on the phone on occasion. Our relationship has grown and I now consider him a good friend on which I can depend and never worry.

I got quite chummy with another commenter on his blog, and she eventually started her own. I met up with her once when I was in her fair city and had a second meeting planned when my father passed unexpectedly and I had to cancel. She was there for me on the phone in my moment of need as I was alone in her fair city. She is a beautiful woman whom I’ve grown to adore and she is just over four feet. She is a friend on whom I can depend and never worry.

When traveling in Washington DC I had the treat of a meet up at this Blogger’s workplace and received a private tour of a few of the exhibits followed by coffee and laughter. He doesn’t seem to blog these days, but I can assure you he is very much over four feet and proved himself to be a tour guide on which you can depend and never worry.

Another blogger I’ve followed for years has become a friend via phone and E mail over the years. I hope to meet him in person one day. I’ve heard he may be  over four feet and I know through experience and a mutual friend he is someone on which I can depend and never worry.

Recently in the last forementioned bloggers comments I clicked over onto this blog from a comment which I resonated. I read a few posts and rather enjoyed myself there. I left a comment and then found comments on my blog. Our humor seemed similar. This certain blogger lives in my fair city. I reached out and suggested coffee. The invitation was graciously accepted and yesterday we met up for the first time . Talk, laugh and share we did. I made a new friend who is well over four feet and I’m betting will prove dependable on which to never worry.

Mesuggah Shack San Diego CA

Mesuggah Shack San Diego CA

A new friend was made yesterday at Messugah Shack in San Diego where everyone is welcome. Fearsome & I look forward to future meet ups with this new friend, bloggers we have met and many bloggers we have yet to meet. It’s a beautiful world and sometimes we just have to get out in it to fully appreciate that fact.

Get out there!

One Hundred Thousand

100,000

Sometime this past week we surpassed 100,000 page views here on Fearsome’s funny little blog thingy. We are humbled.

Blogging has proven to be quite enjoyable.

Many motivators, advisors, counselors and teachers during the experience that is my life have advised that journaling is a wonderful way for one to get themselves to the next level and then the next. I’d buy a journal, write a couple entries and then forget it. I actually found one of those old journals when cleaning my desk a few days ago. It was from 2005 and had exactly three entries in it.

Blogging has proven to be something I do daily. Sometimes it’s just a post of a beard pic, but I posted. I took the time to choose a beard that fit my mood and posted it. Many days I post a beard and a written post, or quote, or video, or even music to fit my mood, feelings, thoughts or motivation. I’ve gotten to know myself better. I’ve shared, opened, grown, learned, expressed, laughed, cried and loved. I’ve made friends.

More than 100,000 page views, just over 1,550 posts and some 32,000 visitors in just 2 1/2 years of self growth. I think I’ll keep on with this here blog thingy and Fearsome thinks he’s going to stick around too. We love having all y’all along on our journey. We are honored to be with you on yours as well.

Thank you! Yes…Thanks for clicking on Fearsome Beard, may your week be a wonderful one full of happiness, love, laughter and gratitude!

Celebrating Pride Month

Pride is upon us. We are a little behind here as San Diego Pride celebrations aren’t ever until late July, thus it always takes me a while to pick up the ball.

Each year Kelly kicks off June with his iconic photo:

Kelly's Flag

Kelly’s Flag

He challenges us to re-post his photo with a link back to his original. A challenge that brings us together in pride is a challenge worth participating in.

Happy Pride Y’all!

A day at the beach

Life, living it gets busy. I like busy. I believe a full dance card is a dersirable dance card. If it’s not full, I say get out there and fill it up.

I had a private comment from a dear friend and reader of Fearsome Beard that they thought maybe I had lost interest in this here blog thingy since I’ve had some breaks in written posts. I must have had a look in my eye because very quickly he said “or maybe you have just been busy?”

I had to laugh and then reassured him busy was the answer. I actually appreciate his enlightenment for it makes me pause and assess.

Being contemplative I thought about it and I definately haven’t lost any interest, in fact I am loving this here blog thingy more and more as time passes. I do have gaps in the written prose, but that’s ok. Life is busy. I have distractions. Sometimes I have something to say and haven’t the time to stop and say it. Other times I have the time to stop, yet nothing to say. The best part of the blog is that when the stars align, I actually do stop and write. I contemplate, laugh, cry, think, read, express, research, communicate, grow, interact, share and learn.

Some days I get busy. Some days I just go to the beach.

Fearsome on Haulover Beach, yes the people behind me are nude but hey so am I.
