Seems we lost a voice of several generations today who was definitely part of the soundtrack of my life as well as countless millions of others. Tony Bennett was 96 years old when he passed after decade upon decade upon decade of entertaining millions. It is said that in the past few years of his ever increasing dementia that Lady GaGa’s performances with him during this time were the only connection that brought him out of his prison of confusion.
Legend has it that this tune is the one that made him famous …
Tony Bennett – I Left My Heart In San Fransisco – Ed Sullivan Show 1964
Thank you to Lady GaGa for keeping his flame alive.
Tony Bennett and Lady GaGa – The Lady Is A Tramp – Live at Radio City Music Hall – December 2021
Thank you Tony for the love and memories. Godspeed
And don’t forget the earlier wonderful duets albums Tony Bennett did with kd lang and Diana Krall too! Lady Gaga was a bit of a latecomer.
Agreed.
It was a privilege to have seen him in the flesh performing live.
I’ve written about this before, but in the early 1980s when Dusty Springfield pulled out of her projected national tour due to disappointing lack of public interest (If can you believe it!), Tony B. who happened to be over here at that time, at the last minute stepped in to perform in Oxford where I then lived, his unscheduled late appearance resulting in the 2,000 seat theatre being only about 1/3 full – BUT it meant I could have a seat right near the stage. It turned out to be one the topmost experiences of my theatre-going life. A lovely man and one GREAT entertainer. Thanks ever so, Tony!
His presence just simply conveyed the joy he had of entertaining.
