  1. Absolutely! Trouble is I’ve now seen it so many times, and it’s been analysed to death by reviewers and film buffs, that the original shocks have long since evaporated, never to be recovered. Even that unwise Gus van Sant shot-for-shot re-make (in colour!) of 1998 couldn’t resurrect the impulse of the original (of course!) – and no one ever will. When I first saw it in 1966 as a cinema re-release (I was too young in 1960 to catch it on its first showings) I’ll never forget the terrorised screams from the audience, nearly all of whom would also have been seeing it for the first time. No other film I’ve seen since has drawn such a spectacular, visceral reaction from a live audience.
