Close to you

I am at loss for words when it comes to the  memories this song brings to me. I was young and hadn’t yet gotten to the age of falling in love. Yet this song gave me a comfort, and a glimpse of what romance must be just from the beauty of the music. I knew every single word of this song and could sing it from start to finish. Of corse I could because I had listened to it daily on my handheld transistor radio. A radio I still have to this day.

Still in its carrying case.

The station you ask? Oh that would have been AM 1240 WROV. The radio? Yes it still works. It was at my side for years and even survived a few bicycle crashes. My brother found it in a drawer when cleaning out our mother’s house after I moved her out here to live with me. He saved it from the sale for me as he knew how much I treasured it as a young boy.

I post the tune today as I can’t think of a better song to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day. I send you love and hope that you in turn spread love to everyone you see and touch today.

Carpenters – (They Long To Be) Close To You – 1970

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue
That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue
That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Wa, close to you
Wa, close to you
Ha, close to you
La, close to you
(….oh and yes Karen was not only the vocalist, but also the drummer. )

    • It is actually. I was often alone since I was the youngest sibling by a number of years and it was my very own connection to the world. Also the fact my much older brother remembered that and snagged it for me.

  1. Thank you so much for bringing back this memory. As a youth, this song was one of my connections to what I hoped I would find in a husband, and I did. When I played it, from your site, Tim, (husbear), heard it playing and came into our home office. We sang every word of it together while watching the video. Tim’s words, ” OMG I haven’t heard that song in years, When I was a kid I would listen to it on a 45, with earphones in my room so my brothers wouldn’t hear it. They though I was a FAG”. He never told me that story before, hearing it now provoked a memory for him, and I as well. Amazing how a song brings back memories, good ones, questionable ones, and memories how we have moved along.
So Thank you for giving us a memory, and Happy Valentines Day.
By the way the way, I still have my transistor radio from when I was a youth as well.

  2. That’s sweet! I first heard this song probably on The Simpsons or some other TV show, but I remember being struck by the beauty of it. Karen makes a unique and intimate connection with the listener. ❤
